Honoring Service and Tradition

Marines with Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, run to security positions after offloading from a CH-53E Super Sea Stallion helicopter during a mission in Helmand province, Afghanistan, April 28, 2014. The company's mission was to disrupt Taliban forces in Larr Village and establish a presence in the area. Five days prior to the helicopter-borne mission, the company confiscated two rocket-propelled grenades in the vicinity of the village.

As November unfolds, two significant dates beckon us to reflect on courage, service, and patriotism: Veterans Day and the United States Marine Corps Birthday. Each holds profound significance in honoring the bravery and sacrifice of those who serve in our armed forces and commemorating the illustrious history of one of the nation’s most revered military branches.

The Significance of Veterans Day

Veterans Day, observed annually on November 11th, is dedicated to honoring all who have served in the United States military. Unlike Memorial Day, which remembers those who gave their lives for our country, Veterans Day pays tribute to all U.S. military veterans—both living and deceased. The origins of Veterans Day date back to the end of World War I, "the war to end all wars," when an armistice was declared between the Allies and Germany, taking effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918.

Originally known as Armistice Day, the day was first commemorated in 1919, on the first anniversary of the armistice. In 1954, after the United States had experienced the significant human costs of World War II and Korea, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day. This change was a deliberate expansion of the day’s purpose—to honor American veterans of all wars.

Veterans Day is a federal holiday that encourages Americans to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who served their country, to appreciate the peace their sacrifices achieved, and to foster patriotism and responsible citizenship.

Celebrating the Marine Corps Birthday

November 10th marks a pivotal annual celebration for another segment of our armed forces—the birthday of the United States Marine Corps. This day is set aside to celebrate the continuous valor and loyalty of the Marines, with 2024 marking the 249th anniversary of this distinguished military branch.

The Marine Corps was established on November 10, 1775, by the Second Continental Congress, with the passage of a resolution to raise two battalions of Marines. This date is celebrated throughout the Corps with traditional balls and ceremonial cake-cutting, serving as a reminder of the proud legacy Marines have contributed to U.S. military history. The celebrations are steeped in rich traditions, including the reading of Commandant John A. Lejeune’s Birthday Message, which outlines the history, mission, and traditions of the Corps.

Reflecting on Shared Values

The proximity of these dates—Veterans Day and the Marine Corps Birthday—serves as a powerful reminder of the bravery, endurance, and commitment shared by all branches of the military. Each occasion provides a moment to reflect not just on the past sacrifices and historical significance of our military but also on the strength, discipline, and integrity that veterans and service members bring to our communities.

Marines and veterans of other branches often continue their service beyond their military careers, bringing invaluable skills and experiences to various sectors, including education, business, and public service. Their stories and achievements significantly enrich our understanding of duty, leadership, and patriotism.

Moving Forward with Gratitude

As we observe these important dates, let us renew our commitment to honoring the men and women who have served and continue to serve our nation so faithfully. It is a time for educational initiatives, community involvement, and personal reflection on the freedoms we enjoy because of the countless sacrifices of our military personnel.

Let us take pride in our country’s military heritage and show our gratitude through active participation in ceremonies, support of military charities, and public acknowledgment of our veterans' and service members' ongoing contributions to our national story.
